Is Magic Kingdom Good for Kids?

Yes — Magic Kingdom is usually the best first Disney World park for families with young kids. It has a long list of rides with no height requirement, familiar characters, and a mix of calm dark rides and a few bigger thrills. The catch is that the big coasters and Tiana's Bayou Adventure do have height minimums, so measuring kids before you go saves a lot of line-time heartbreak.

Below, Magic Kingdom rides are grouped by the official minimum heights on Disney's attraction pages (accessed October 19, 2026). Rules can change, so re-check close to your trip. Closures to Check Before You Go

As of October 19, 2026, Disney's official attraction pages list these temporary Magic Kingdom closures:

  • Walt Disney World Railroad: closed for routine refurbishment since September 28; expected to reopen in November 2026
  • Tiana's Bayou Adventure: closes for routine refurbishment on November 2; expected to reopen in December 2026
  • Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress: closed since July 6, 2026; expected to reopen in late spring 2027

Dates can change, so re-check Disney's Magic Kingdom attraction list before you lock in your park day.

When Magic Kingdom Fits Your Family

Magic Kingdom fits well when:

  • At least one kid is under ~40 inches and you want lots of rides they can actually board
  • You want classic Disney dark rides and character energy more than animals or studios
  • You can handle a longer walking day and bigger crowds than Animal Kingdom

Best Magic Kingdom Rides for Kids Under ~40 Inches

Kids this age can do most of Magic Kingdom. Start with calm classics:

  • "it's a small world" — slow boat ride, any height; an easy win for preschoolers
  • Dumbo the Flying Elephant and The Magic Carpets of Aladdin — kid-controlled spinners, any height
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid — gentle dark rides
  • Peter Pan's Flight — popular dark ride; some younger kids find the height illusion spooky, so preview if your child is sensitive
  • Jungle Cruise and Pirates of the Caribbean — boat rides with mild thrills/story moments (Pirates has a short drop and darker scenes)
  • Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin — interactive dark ride kids this age often love
  • Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover — a seated break with a view (the Walt Disney World Railroad is another once it reopens)

For calmer kids, the ride finder's calm Magic Kingdom picks under 40 inches skips higher-thrill options.

At 32 inches, Tomorrowland Speedway opens with a tall companion (54"+). At 35 inches, The Barnstormer (small coaster) opens. At 38 inches, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad open — both are real coasters, just milder than Space Mountain or TRON.

Mid Heights: 40 to 43 Inches

At 40 inches, Tiana's Bayou Adventure opens. It is a log-flume style ride with a large drop, and you may get wet. Pack a poncho or change of clothes if kids this age want to ride.

Note (Oct 19, 2026): Disney's official Tiana's Bayou Adventure page says the attraction will temporarily close for routine refurbishment on November 2 and is expected to reopen in December 2026. Re-check the official page before you lock your park day.

Everything in the under-40 list still applies, plus Barnstormer / Mine Train / Big Thunder if kids clear those heights.

Taller Kids: 44 Inches and Up

  • 44 inches — Space Mountain: indoor roller coaster in the dark. Intense for some kids even when they clear the height.
  • 48 inches — TRON Lightcycle / Run: Disney calls it one of its fastest coasters; motorcycle-style seat. Many kids this age still prefer Space Mountain first, or skip TRON if coasters are new.

If one child is too short or not interested, Disney's Rider Switch lets one adult wait with the child while the other adult rides, then swap without waiting in the full standby line again (see Disney's Rider Switch page for current rules).

A Simple One-Park Plan by Height

Kids mostly under 40 inches

  1. Arrive near opening and start in Fantasyland (Pooh, Little Mermaid, "it's a small world," Dumbo).
  2. Grab Peter Pan's Flight early if it is a must — waits grow fast.
  3. Midday: PeopleMover, PhilharMagic, or an indoor show break.
  4. Afternoon: Adventureland boat rides (Jungle Cruise / Pirates) when energy allows.
  5. If a child is 35–38"+ and coaster-ready, add Barnstormer or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train later.

Mixed heights (one short, one taller)

Use Rider Switch on Mine Train, Big Thunder, Tiana's (when open), Space Mountain, or TRON so the shorter sibling is not stuck in every line.

Older kids (44"+ / 48"+) can add Space Mountain and TRON at quieter times or with Lightning Lane options shown in the My Disney Experience app (prices and availability vary by date).

Heat, Crowds, and Safety Tips

Magic Kingdom is large, outdoor-heavy, and often crowded. Plan water and shade breaks, and use indoor attractions to cool off. If a child shows signs of heat illness, get help from park First Aid or a doctor. Disney lists First Aid centers in its theme parks.

Useful gear (affiliate links may apply): a cooling towel, a kids' rain poncho for Tiana's, and a stroller fan. Our Disney World packing list for kids has the full checklist.

Tickets

Magic Kingdom is included with standard Disney World park tickets. Check Disney's official ticket page for current child ticket ages and prices before you buy. Compare current ticket options on our Disney World deals page.
